The Jade Widow

jade-widowDeborah O’Brien –

A captivating historical novel of pioneering Australian women finding their way in a man’s world. It is 1885, and Amy Chen is still in black, more than a decade after the death of her beloved husband Charles. But her widow’s weeds belie a determined young woman with a big ambition: Amy is going to build the grandest rural hotel in the colony of New South Wales, complete with its very own ‘ascending cabinet’. Meanwhile, her best friend, Eliza Miller, has dreams of her own – to become one of Australia’s first female doctors. However when she returns to Millbrooke from her medical studies at the Sorbonne, she finds the job she thought was hers has been taken by a man. Over the course of two turbulent years both women will face difficult choices – love or duty? Career or marriage? Is it possible to have it all?

Invention of Wings

invention-of-wingsSue Monk Kid –

A masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom and the desire to have a voice in the world. The story follows Hetty Grimke, a Charleston slave, and Sarah, the daughter of the wealthy Grimke family. The novel begins on Sarah’s eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership over Handful, who is to be her handmaid. The story follows the next thirty-five years of their lives. Inspired in part by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke (a feminist, suffragist and, importantly, an abolitionist), Kidd allows herself to go beyond the record to flesh out the inner lives of all the characters, both real and imagined.

Imperial Fire

imperial-fireRobert Lyndon –

In the world after 1066, vast empires clamor for dominance. From the Normans in the north to the Byzantines in the south, battles rage across Europe and around its fringes. But in the east, an empire still mightier stirs, wielding a weapon to rule the world: gunpowder.

Seeking the destructive might of this ‘fire drug’, the mercenary Vallon – a man made of grit and earth as much as of flesh and blood – is sent by the defeated Byzantine emperor on a secret and near-impossible quest to the far off land of Song Dynasty China. Alongside a squadron of highly trained soldiers, Vallon is accompanied by the learned physician Hero, hermit-like tracker Wayland and a young, ego-driven upstart named Lucas. All have their own reasons for going, all have secrets.

It’s a quest that will lead them across treacherous seas and arid desserts and into the uncharted land of  mountains and plains beyond the Silk Road. Many will die… but the rewards are unbelievable.

Coal Creek

coal-creekAlex Miller –

Aust novel. Bobby Blue is caught between loyalty to his only friend, Ben Tobin, and his boss, Daniel Collins, the new constable at Mount Hay. Bobby understands the people and the ways of Mount Hay. Collins studies the country as an archaeologist might, bringing his coastal values to the hinterland. Increasingly bewildered and goaded to action by his wife, Constable Collins takes up his shotgun and his Webley pistol to deal with Ben. Bobby’s love for Collins’ wilful young daughter Irie is exposed, leading to tragic consequences for them all. Miller’s exquisite depictions of the country of the Queensland highlands form the background of this simply told but deeply significant novel of friendship, love, loyalty and the tragic consequences of misunderstanding and mistrust. This book is a wonderfully satisfying novel with a gratifying resolution. It carries all the wisdom and emotional depth.
